Students interested in investment banking, investment management, equity research, private equity, other finance roles or consulting are encouraged to participate. This will be a 2 to 2 1/2 hour workshop, followed by broader discussion and Q&A. We will work through an interesting case study for building a financial model on a hypothetical public company. Students should bring a fully-charged laptop in order to work in class on the model template, which will be provided in advance along with the case to those registered in CampusGroups. The focus will be building integrated financial statements with key drivers. DCF will be the primary valuation focus, while touching on other approaches. Toward the end of the session Ted and Stephen will be happy to speak with interested students about their observations on investing in both public and private companies and answer any questions.

Ted Janus, principal of J Capital, invests in private and public equities in both the financial services and consumer sectors. He also invests in private equity funds and hedge funds. Previously he was a partner and director of research at Palo Alto Investors, a hedge fund. Mr. Janus holds a BA in Political Science and an MBA from the university of California, Berkeley, where he currently serves on the Board of the Haas School of Business.

Stephen Peterson is a senior investment analyst at Foresite Capital, which invests growth capital in the healthcare sector. He has a decade of investment analyst experience in both equity and debt securities. Prior to Foresite Capital, Stephen was the Founder and President of SCP Capital Advisors, a sub-advisor for money management firms and early stage companies. Prior to founding SCP, Stephen worked with Ted as an analyst at Palo Alto Investors.
